Invoice OCR vs AI extraction: what's the difference?

The short answer
Invoice OCR converts an image to raw text and usually needs a template built for each vendor's layout. AI extraction understands the document, identifying totals, dates, and line items on layouts it has never seen, then validates the result. OCR is one step; AI extraction is the path from document to validated, posted ERP record. DynamoDocs uses AI extraction, so there are no per-vendor templates.
What OCR does
OCR (optical character recognition) reads pixels into text. On its own it doesn't know which text is the invoice total versus a line price, so it typically relies on a template per layout.
What AI extraction adds
AI classifies the document and locates each field by meaning instead of position, so it handles new and varied layouts without a template. It can also be trained on your own sample documents.
Why the last mile matters
Extraction is only useful if the data is validated and posted. AI extraction in a full pipeline checks the result against your rules and writes it into your ERP.
